Our History
Our church began as an Indian (Keralite) oriented community known as South India Assembly of God in 1992. Soon thereafter, the church became affiliated with the New York District Assemblies of God. With the direction of the Holy Spirit and vision given to the leadership, we became affiliated with the General Council of The Assemblies of God in 1998 and changed our name to Salem Assembly of God (SAG), as called today.
It wasn’t until 2001 that the church had a place of worship to call its own. The grace of God and fervent prayers equipped us to purchase a house of worship in the city of Elmont, which was dedicated to God in 2002. Since then, God has enabled SAG to conduct services regularly in both English and Malayalam, to hold Sunday School with a systematic teaching of God’s Word, to have growing men, women, and youth ministries, to purchase a parsonage, and to reach the community and world through outreach.
In 2019, we were able to start a service dedicated for the community and reaching the area around us, enabling us to partake in His commission. The church has evolved into group of people with a mission to impact the area where we live, proclaiming the great news that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Savior. SAG is a gospel and Christ-centered community that desires to grow in and share the love of God.
The church is invested in the development of youth, training and building them into a generation that works towards the expansion of the kingdom of God. We have a mission in our hearts to prepare our community, city, and the country for HIS second coming. The church isn’t just a particular building or congregation but the spiritual fellowship of all who belong to Jesus Christ. If we belong to Christ, we also belong to each other.
